The British MuseumLondon, England
4.3 / 10
The main historical and archaeological museum of the country, one of the largest in the world. The building has about 100 exhibition halls, where exhibits are presented from all over the world - the former colonies of the British Empire. There are also ancient Egyptian and antique artifacts. Many countries demand to return the exhibits to their homeland, as it is believed that they got to the British Museum in a not entirely honest way. I admit I'm not the most Museum type guy, but I thought it was really amazing to check the Rosetta Stone, the original blocks from the Parthenon, check the natural "human mummy", amongst many other objects and artifacts (awesome clocks, incredible chess board, weapons, traditions, etc.). And to finish, the best part... You can check all that for FREE!!!

The museum itself is great, and now is a perfect time to visit as there are very few people. Easy to get up close to the Rosetta Stone, where the last.. Read more » time I visited it was very crowded. They had the entire thing roped off in a one way system. If you want to use the loo or visit the shop I suggest going before going into the egypt section, you'll get mostly stuck until you hit the last part, the African art / American section. You then get led down some stairs and out the back section. No cafes open inside the gate so eat before or plan to go to one of the little local ones outside (maybe they open later in the day-we were there from 10-11:30). Wish the rest of the museum was open to see other exhibits. It's really just Egyptian, Greek, Roman, African and America's. After downloading the map, there is another section but it wasn't clear with the one way system how to get there, or back into the main hall. Still recommend going, espiecially early (they open at 10am when we went). Beat the crowds and then grab a bite to eat afterwards. |

Right, as for the museum itself; as of early September 2020, the hand held audio guide isn't available. What they advise you to do, is use a QR reader and get information that way. You can also go to google's playstore, and download an audio from there; multiple languages are available.
A large section of the museum deals with Egyptian history, from the 4th and 3rd millenium BC. Both the Rosetta Stone, and enormous statues of animals with altered heads. The pharoah's were viewed as near God like people, and even touching their feet was treated as great privilege. The depictions on pharaoh's tombs, indicated how they were to live in the afterlife, so included food, servants etc...
Next there's Ancient Greece, leading up to the Roman era; with numerous statues and coinage. You're then taken to the Minoans and Miceneans; and shown some musical instruments made from bone. They're parts of the Greek Parthenon there, and also a full size replica of it. Then you go to the more modern collections from Africa studies, and some modern art. There is an emphasis on how items were obtained, and deal with weaponary and African beliefs.
A grand day out, although no cream teas as the cafè is closed. |

They have an excellent collection of ancient Chinese coins.Lovely fantastic idols.
Indian architecture is greatest.
The place is full of wonders, too many to explore and appreciate in one day though. Risk for children to get bored as there are so many exhibitions. The free map provides a 'quick tour of main things to see' which is handy if you have limited time / exploring with children. |
