Shoes on the Danube Bank

Budapest, Hungary
4.6 / 10
An original and touching monument to Jews shot on the embankment during World War II. The executions were carried out by functionaries of the Hungarian Nazi party. On the stone pavement there are many pairs of shoes of different sizes, among them there are children's shoes. There is also a bench with memorial tables, where the names of people affected by the massacre are immortalized.

A thought provoking memorial. I would recommend for people to come visit as it is a quiet place and doesn’t take long. Just along the river- you can stumble across it easily. Nice to see so many people being respectful.

Visited here as part of my first visit to Budapest and for Christmas. A very moving and respectful piece of art to mark a truly dark time in our history. Please read what happened here before you visit to fully appreciate and respect it.

Never forget. This architecturally simple, yet gripping memorial, serves to remind us of the thousands of innocent lives that were lost on the banks of the Danube. It is easy to get there and large enough to see, even in large crowds.

Water attracts everyone. Danube river gives the perfect attraction by having its wide size and different beautiful locations arround it. Hungarian parliament is also located on its edge. Night view full of lights, cold breeze and light smell. Love i.. Read more »
