The castle originated in the 5th century A.D. on the site of the Roman fortification, over one and a half thousand years of its existence, it was repeatedly rebuilt. In the XII century it housed the residence of the Moorish ruler. Until the 16th century, Portuguese monarchs lived in the castle. In 1755, the building was destroyed by an earthquake to its very foundations. Recovery occurred only in the first half of the 20th century.

They take your entry fee without telling you most all the exhibits advertised are closed. There is also nothing on their website letting you know what is closed. You can wander around the old castle but there is nothing telling you about the differen.. Read more »

Castelo de S. Jorge is beautiful. Full of history, once the house for the royals (King of Portugal) with the most beautiful scenery of the old city of Lisbon. The ? peacocks definitely give me a majestic spectacle. Great to find a bench and read your.. Read more »

Beautiful place, but not very surprising. Only the view was stunning. Castle could be seen in hour without other tourists. Sadly, I was in quarantine, so, many places was closed but in all area we was 5 or 7 people. But for a tourist I would recommen.. Read more »
