The original mansion was built at the beginning of the 20th century for a wealthy businessman, Sir G.M. Pellate. After some time, he sold the castle due to the inability to maintain real estate and pay taxes. Until the 30s. the building was used as a hotel, and then was transferred to the state. The castle was turned into a tourist attraction. It is rented periodically for private events.

We reached around 10AM and it was not very crowded. Started the tour and the found that the entry process was very simple. No long queues. They have organized the place very well and the guide pamphlet is very easy to follow. There are placards placed near each room which explain the room features like its purpose and a bit of history. The place was kept very clean and it was a nice experience to see the different items on display.
But for the price they charge, they have not done a great job in the upkeep. Some of the doors were creaky and the paint etc. was coming off. They could easily do a better job in keeping the place in better shape given it's importance in Toronto's history.

Because of that, I’d recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening when it isn’t as hot.
The majority of rooms in the castle are quite well-maintained to be an accurate representation of what it was like back in the day. Some parts of the castle though, they’ve clearly made some changes which makes it feel a little less authentic. For instance, there are some decorations left up from their escape room series which takes you out of the time period of the castle. But all in all, I would still recommend a visit at least once in your life! It is a stunning piece of architecture in the middle of a big city!
